About Race and the City

Race and the City is a blog that is dedicated to talking about race. Funded by Arts NSW through the Western Sydney Artists’ Fellowship program, this blog is an interactive site which aims to explore issues and ideas about race, culture, sexuality and gender. A series of 10 essays will be posted as a starting point for discussion about how race gets played out in the city.

This blog has been conceived and created by Paula Abood, a community cultural development worker, writer, educator, activist and filmmaker. She has worked with immigrant and refugee communities in Western Sydney for the past two decades. She has written for performance, radio, publications and film. Her works include The Clash of Civilisations (2010), Huriyya and her Sisters (2009), The Afghan Women’s Dobaiti Project (2006), The Book of African Australian Stories (2006), Of Middle Eastern Appearance (2000), Gibran Khalil Gibran (1999), Bukra fil Mish Mish (1998), Od Zena do Zena (1997), She Played the Derbaki (1996), and the politics of belly dancing: a choreopoem (1994).
